When western religion known as Christianity was introduced in Africa, it was not resisted and challenged even though it condemned African culture and tradition either out of fear, ignorance or inferiority complex. When the Jewish God was introduced to other nations as the true God, it was resisted and challenged. In such places, it did not destroy their cultures and tradition. That’s why we still have gods in different religions with similar characteristics.
Now that most Africans realized that they were deceived into destroying most of their cultures and traditions and that there are also errors contained in the faith sold to them many years ago, they still could not challenge such as a result of same fear, ignorance and inferiority complex. In most cases, they even think it is evil to point out the mistakes of Christianity and to expose the errors taught by the organization out of ignorance. The worst aspect of this is that God is enrobed in this whole mischievous act making him look like an ignorant and imperfect God controlled wholly by men. They promote him, defend him, argue for him, make him look human, beg for him, make him solicit for things from human beings, privatize him, make him change his mind and give him all human attribute just for their selfish ends. He becomes a God who sleeps, gets angry, takes side, forgets, loves, gives some people wealth, curse others, save some people in danger and kill others, protects some and expose others to danger, has a house and begs for money, creates devil to tempt his children and a God who is not omniscient.
Most Africans in the current generation have realized that there is one God with same characteristics who is one to all, they regretted throwing away most of their cultures which were more valuable and practicable than those of the new religion they have adopted. This gave rise to culture conflicts in many areas of life and institutions such as traditions, marriage, religious worship, food, dressing, music, language, ethics, family life, death and burial, social integration, politics and beliefs. It has become necessary to redeem these cultures to bring peace and harmony among the people.
In as much as different religious communities have realized the conflicts and the resultant effects, they are not in a hurry to educate the people on the truth about the values these cultures offered to the people. It has also been observed that the western religion is not superior to the indigenous ones especially in practice and values. Most Africans have also realized that there was a kind of betrayal due to their ignorance and backward in civilization. It is therefore important to reconsider many of these cultures that were discarded and reinitiate them into the people.
We therefore need practical re-orientation on our value system, beliefs, cultures and traditions and reintegrate them into the modern way of life.
