Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom after being inaugurated as the first citizen of London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, United Kingdom, marking a new era of dynamic and inclusive governance.

At just 29, Princess Bright has etched her name in history as a trailblazer, embodying excellence, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her community. She is an inspiration to Nigerian youths and the global diaspora.

Her ascent to leadership began in 2018 when, at the age of 22, she became the youngest-ever Labour Councillor in Barking and Dagenham. Her passion for public service and sharp intellect quickly distinguished her as a formidable leader.

Over the past seven years, she has championed policies that prioritize community welfare and governance improvements, earning the trust and admiration of her constituents.

Her appointment as Chairperson of the Borough’s audit and standards committee further showcased her expertise. Leveraging her background in accountancy and private-sector audit experience, Princess Bright drove initiatives to ensure robust financial management and accountability, setting a high standard for public administration.

In her own words, Princess Bright expressed her deep connection to Barking and Dagenham, stating, “At just 29, I’ve decided to take a year out of my corporate career to give back to the Borough that raised me, not just as a Councillor, but now as your Mayor. Barking and Dagenham is my home, my heart, and my community. I’m deeply honoured to serve it.”

Her vision for her tenure is clear: to be a visible, engaged, and transformative leader. “Being Mayor is more than a title; it’s a promise to be present, visible, and to uplift every corner of our Borough,” she affirmed.

Over the next year, she plans to connect with residents, support local businesses, visit schools, and celebrate the vibrant diversity of her community. Her leadership is poised to amplify the voices of Barking and Dagenham, fostering unity and progress.Beyond her political achievements, Princess Bright brings a wealth of professional experience to her role.

A 2017 graduate of the University of Westminster, she began her career in investment banking, where her analytical skills and leadership shone.

In 2021, she transitioned to the technology sector, serving as a senior operations manager at Uber UK. Her decision to step away from her corporate career to focus on her mayoral duties reflects her selflessness and dedication to public service.

Her attainment attracted a powerful significance with a growing influence of Nigerians in public service globally.

According to her, “I’m proud to serve my Borough and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve and rise.”

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Opeyemi Bright launched her political journey at the age of 22 when she was elected as a Councillor.

She continues a family legacy of political leadership. Her mother, Dr. Folasade Bright served as Civic Mayor of Hackney for two years while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright is a renowned senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Her journey from a young Councillor to Mayor of Barking and Dagenham exemplifies the values of hard work, resilience, and community spirit that resonate deeply with Nigerians worldwide. Her story is a testament to the potential of the Nigerian diaspora to lead and inspire on a global stage.

By this feat, Princess Bright has joined the league of Nigerians who are shaping world politics. Others include UK Secretary of State, Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP, Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister, Uzoma Asagwara and US Congresswoman, Esther Agbaje.
