The life of Chief (Dr) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion is an inspiration for all Nigerians. The Esama of Benin Kingdom rose from a modest beginning to become a colossus who has for several decades penetrated several spheres of human endeavours. The title Esama traditionally means the “son of the people”, with responsibilities including assisting the poor in medial, monetary and private venture forms.
His incredible combination of foresight, enterprise and courage enabled the creation of business conglomerates and institutions across critical sectors of our national life.
Igbinedion’s business empire includes an international property portfolio and a private TV and radio station, called Independent Radio and Television. He owns a private bank, oil refinery, diamond, gold, marble mines over Africa, a private university (Igbinedion University, the first private university in Nigeria, located at Okada town) and a large number of hotels. He established the first private airline, Okada Air, of over 40 aircraft (planes and helicopters). He has built numerous churches including a Grand Catholic Cathedral, and has set up and owns a number of private hospitals across Nigeria.
As a philanthropist, the Esama has stretched forth his hands of succour to many Nigerians over the years. Many will not forget in hurry his pioneering soup kitchen initiative for the hungry many years ago.
As a cultural icon, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion has been a standard bearer and a worthy ambassador of the rich Benin cultural heritage. It is only him who could have in an innovative manner combined the promotion of traditions with solid support for religious organizations.
One of his children, Lucky Nosakhare Iginedion was the governor of Edo State. He is an extraordinary Nigerian who has placed his feet on the sand of gold.
